{"id":91,"date":"2009-08-26T11:20:35","date_gmt":"2009-08-26T10:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ukoln.ac.uk\/ukolndev\/?p=91"},"modified":"2013-06-08T13:47:45","modified_gmt":"2013-06-08T13:47:45","slug":"linux-on-a-toshiba-nb200","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.emmatonkin.com\/ukolndev\/2009\/08\/26\/linux-on-a-toshiba-nb200\/","title":{"rendered":"Linux on a Toshiba NB200"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to Ultim8Fury, Leesa and Nick255 for the following.<\/p>\n<p>Presumably as it&#8217;s a fairly new model, after setting up linux (Ubuntu Netbook Remix in this case) on a Toshiba NB200 I ran into a few little problems.\u00a0 Most of the smaller ones were solved\/mitigated by Ultim8Fury&#8217;s excellent Setup Guide <a href=\"http:\/\/ubuntuforums.org\/showthread.php?t=1215665\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 However if, like me, you had windows off and linux on faster than ** then you may have run into the &#8216;enabling wifi&#8217; problem.<\/p>\n<p>The drivers suggested by Ultim8Fury cannot turn the card on and windows XP will not reinstall without some very advanced &#8216;slipstreaming&#8217; technique due to a lack of drivers for the RAID interface.\u00a0 So if you forgot to enable wireless before removing XP and do not own a copy of Vista (presumably this may work, I don&#8217;t actually know) how do you enable the card?<\/p>\n<p>It was Leesa&#8217;s explaination of how to enable bluetooth and Nick255&#8217;s adaptation of it that provided the answer.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<div>Originally Posted by <strong>Leesa<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Bluetooth is working with omnibook module:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Get sources from <a href=\"http:\/\/dl.getdropbox.com\/u\/362618\/omnibook-source_2.20070211%2Bsvn20071217-1_all.deb\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/dl.getdropbox.com\/u\/362618\/om&#8230;1217-1_all.deb<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Make sure Bluetooth is enabled in Windows<\/li>\n<li>sudo apt-get install module-assistant build-essential<\/li>\n<li>sudo m-a a-i omnibook-source<\/li>\n<li>Try it: sudo modprobe omnibook ectype=14<\/li>\n<li>Make it autoload:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>sudo nano \/etc\/modules<\/li>\n<li>Put &#8220;omnibook&#8221; at the latest line<\/li>\n<li>sudo nano \/etc\/modprobe.d\/omnibook.conf:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>options omnibook ectype=14 userset=0 lcd=0 display=0 blank=0 battery=0 ac=0 bluetooth=1<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Works fine for my NB200, even enabling\/disabling bluetooth via \/proc\/omnibook\/bluetooth<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>You should use ectype=12 instead of ectype=14. That way you can enable or disable wifi without needing to boot Windows. Unfortunately, the hotkeys don&#8217;t work, so you have to manually echo either 1 or 0 to \/proc\/omnibook\/wifi (or if you prefer, just disable it in the bios when you want to be sure it is disabled).<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>To summarise (in Ubuntu):<\/div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"http:\/\/dl.getdropbox.com\/u\/362618\/omnibook-source_2.20070211%2Bsvn20071217-1_all.deb\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/dl.getdropbox.com\/u\/362618\/om&#8230;1217-1_all.deb<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Install the omnibook-source .deb file, module-assistant and build-essential.<\/li>\n<li>Run module-assistant on the omnibook-source package.<\/li>\n<li>Load the module with ectype=12.<\/li>\n<li>Turn the Wifi on and off with \/proc\/omnibook\/wifi<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>As root:<\/p>\n<p><code># This will install any dependencies not already on the system:<br \/>\napt-get install bzip2 debhelper dpatch kernel-package make module-assistant build-essential<br \/>\nmkdir \/tmp\/omnibook<br \/>\ncd \/tmp\/omnibook<br \/>\nwget http:\/\/dl.getdropbox.com\/u\/362618\/omnibook-source_2.20070211%2Bsvn20071217-1_all.deb<br \/>\ndpkg -i omnibook-source_2.20070211+svn20071217-1_all.deb<br \/>\nm-a a-i omnibook-source<br \/>\nmodprobe omnibook ectype=12<br \/>\necho 1 &gt; \/proc\/omnibook\/wifi<\/code><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>If this works as advertised, go ahead and add &#8220;omnibook&#8221; to the end of \/etc\/modules and &#8220;options omnibook ectype=12&#8221; to \/etc\/modprobe.d\/omnibook.conf.<\/p>\n<p>To disable the wireless adapter just use the command &#8220;echo 0 &gt; \/proc\/omnibook\/wifi&#8221;.
