Emma has occasionally been accused of committing research.

She has supervised MSc-level student research on various subjects, such as the development of social sensors and protest on social media.
Various places with an LIS/info focus (such as Washington, Baltimore, Rutgers, UNC, UGA, LIU, VT, Hawaii, SUNY, NYU, Cornell, Florida, Calgary, Alabama, Arizona and Texas) have been known to use her work for teaching purposes.
